Somali Marine Trade (SMT)

Sustainability

A trade platform built for the long term

Somalia has one of the longest coastlines in Africa and a rich marine resource base. SMT's role is to help trade it responsibly and transparently. These are the commitments that guide how we build the platform.

Responsible sourcing

SMT is building relationships with suppliers who source responsibly, and uses traceability so the origin of a product is visible rather than opaque.

Coastal livelihoods

By connecting Somali suppliers directly to international buyers, SMT aims to keep more value within local coastal communities and fishing operations.

Transparency over claims

We prefer to show verifiable information — verification status, traceable lots, documented handling — over unverifiable sustainability labels.

Long-term partnerships

Structured, repeatable B2B relationships are healthier for both buyers and suppliers than one-off, informal transactions.

Honest framing. These are commitments and an approach, not certified environmental claims. Where specific sustainability certifications apply to a product or supplier, they are shown on that supplier's profile only when they have actually been recorded and verified.
